Announcing 2019 Summer Health and Medical Sciences Professional Development

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), in collaboration with the Virginia Health and Medical Science Educators Association (VAHAMSEA), is pleased to offer in-depth pre- and post-conference professional development workshops as outlined in this Word doc. The professional development will be held at the Great Wolf Lodge, Williamsburg, Virginia. Registration is required and teachers are encouraged to preregister by June 21, 2019, using the links this Word doc.

CTE New Teacher Institute

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), in collaboration with the University of Virginia, will offer the CTE New Teacher Institute from July 8-12, 2019, at the Holiday Inn Valley View, 3315 Ordway Drive, Roanoke, Virginia 24017. The Institute is designed specifically for CTE teachers who are transitioning directly from business and industry to the classroom. The Institute will be conducted by the University of Virginia and upon successful completion, participants will receive three hours of graduate credit for the course, EDIS 5026-Currriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for CTE Educators. In addition, the Institute will satisfy the Curriculum and Instructional Procedures professional studies requirement for teacher licensure.

Preregistration is required. CTE teachers must first complete the VDOE Approval to Enroll Form by June 7, 2019. After receipt of approval from the VDOE, participants must register for the course through the University of Virginia’s online system and submit the tuition payment to the University.

The VDOE will provide lodging for participants and daily breakfast and lunch meals. The school division or participant will be responsible for the course tuition ($1,155) and all other travel expenses. Tuition reimbursement through Perkins funds is not allowed for teachers seeking an initial license.

If you have any questions, please contact Helen G. Fuqua, Institute Coordinator, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, at or by telephone at (804) 225-3119.

New Pharmacy Technician Professional Development Opportunity for Registered Nurses

The Virginia Department of Education and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy are prepared to offer an opportunity to cross train registered nurses to receive the educational competencies to become a pharmacy technician instructor. The participants will have to pass the PTCB to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician and apply for licensure with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy to teach the course in the next academic year 2020-2021. This does not change the instructor requirement for the course-as a licensed pharmacy technician is still the requirement.

It provides school divisions who do not have a large occupational pool of pharmacy technicians to offer nursing one academic year and pharmacy technician the next academic year.

I would like to find out how many school divisions would be interested in sending a nurse for training this summer in June at VCU. The cohort is open to 30 participants. Please share this with the nurses in your school division to see if they would be interested in obtaining this training this summer.
